La historia de 'Murder on the Dancefloor', la canción de Sophie Ellis-Bextor que se viraliza después de 20 años

El cine y la música vuelven a darse la mano con un nuevo fenómeno. Se trata del impacto de la película Saltburn, de Emerald Fennellm, que se estrenó en plataformas a en Navidad y cuya banda sonora está levantando el polvo de uno del hit de la compositora británica Sophie Ellis-Bextor.Murder on the floor ha sido la canción elegida por la directora, que también dirigió el rotundo éxito Una chica prometedora, como telón de fondo para ilustrar la escena final (y bailonga) del thriller psicológico que está causando sensación.

Hace más de 20 años -concretamente, 22- que la cantante lanzó este segundo sencillo del que fue su álbum debut, Read My Lips (2001), tras su primer Take Me Home.

La canción nació de la inspiración de Gregg Alexander, vocalista de New Radicals, a raíz de que se le prohibiera entrar a una discoteca, tal y como cuenta el medio Rock And Pop. Ella completó la letra y tras su lanzamiento se convirtió en un himno de baile que invita a la liberación en la pista y en su sencillo más vendido.

"Es una canción sobre ser utilizada por alguien y aun así sentirse empoderada porque decidiste cómo ibas a reaccionar a ello. Creo que hay mucha liberación en esa idea. Incluso si alguien te trata mal, no dejes que impida que te diviertas", explicó Sophie Ellis-Bextor sobre el significado detrás de la canción a Billboard, según apunta el portal citado anteriormente.

La cantante pop ha revivido el despiadado tema que ya en su día alcanzó el Top 10 en gran parte de Europa, Nueva Zelanda y Canadá. El bombazo del filme de Fennellm ha hecho que el tema sea viral en TikTok y se convierta en tendencia en internet, acumulando millones de escuchas diarias en las plataformas.

Además, ha logrado introducir el nombre de la artista por primera vez en el Billboard Hot 100, la lista más importante de Estados Unidos y país en el que la canción no causó, ni de lejos, la sensación que sí levantó en otros países (un hito en su carrera profesional), y colocarlo en el número 1 viral en EEUU en Spotify.

"Se siente realmente mágico y, si soy sincera, no creo que lo haya procesado por completo", ha declarado la artista a la BBC. "Es una canción que he estado cantando durante más de 20 años. Todavía me encanta cantarlo. Me encanta la forma en que la gente reacciona cuando lo hago en vivo. Pero que gente nueva lo descubra, que se creen nuevos recuerdos con la gente, es algo hermoso".
